Transcendental Knowledge

BG 4.39

çraddhäväl labhate jïänaà

tat-paraù saàyatendriyaù

TRANSLATION

A faithful man who is dedicated to transcendental knowledge and who subdues his senses is eligible to achieve such knowledge, and having achieved it he quickly attains the supreme spiritual peace.

  1. chap 3 karma yoga , chap4 ,transcendental knowledge and chap5 is karma yoga in KC.
  2. generally when scriptures are being taught it is like lawyer is trying to argue ,law code has a purpose of justice ,  but based on the expertise of lawyer one can defeat the purpose of law or fulfill the purpose of the law,
  3. in Vedic system , there are six divisions , they are progressive stages , like sankhya  philosophy ,analyzing matter , after that vaisesika philosophy , then yoga ,reality beyond matter , then karma mimansa –even one know he is not body but interested in sense gratification then nyaya based on Vedanta , 
  4. if one takes only one section of it then one gets incomplete knowledge
  5. like if one takes a section from law
  6. theory has to stand on its own ground not on alternative , but in case of dowry , if woman files a case that then family member is put into jail ,
  7. in scriptures there are sections where they tell about that Lord has impersonality , but there is a context , that is we are attracted to these forms , so Lord does not have form like this but after some sections there is tell Lord has form ,
  8. different philosophers has their own case to argue ,so they may defeat the purpose of the scriptures
  9. in every sentence of law code the purpose of law code is not mentioned
  10.  in modern   society we have knowledge is for control ,
  11. actual purpose of knowledge is to develop virtue , to give up our free will and surrender to Krishna
  12. purpose of knowledge in goodness , passion(control ) , ignorance (destruction )
  13. knowledge in passion ,and ignorance does not enlightens the person ,it expands the ignorance of person
  14. some time instead of people getting influenced by scriptures they impose their modes on scriptures ,
  15. when one is studying the scriptures they have filter ,
  16. SB is like gulabjamun from whichever side you read it is sweet ,
  17. all the scriptures are not directly Krishna katha
  18. even Hari Katha should not be heard from a-vaishnava
  19. we project our consciousness on what we read ,
  20. obstinacy of a conditioned soul can go beyond the persuasive power of the Lord
  21. “we have to empower the holy name to purify our heart ,” by attentively chanting holy name , in “chanting of holyname “
  22. unique presentation of Srila Prabhupada puts forward always the purpose of scriptures ,  Prabhupada is fulfilling the purpose of BG throughout the BG ,
  23. if our desires are materialistic then scriptures will not influence us properly .

 

 

 

Relationship between faith and knowledge

Revision : how do you get knowledge – first faith ,then one should want that knowledge “tat parah” ,one should be attached to that knowledge , third is sense control

 

  1. Krishna is talking about internalization of knowledge ,
  2. Rupa Goswami says that to acquire KC only price is laullayam ,
    1. If some body coming from outside to India ,to find Krishna it is so difficult
  3. if one is tat-parah then Krishna helps that person
  4. one person asked to mahraj – how to know who is genuine , mah said that first ask the question that am I genuine
  5. for modern people spirituality means stress relieving process
    1. by laughing one may feel little happy but that is not spirituality ,
    2. for people ,spirituality ,is like shock absorber ,
    3. KC is also shock absorber , but that is not the essence of it
  6. we need to ask fundamental questions about what is life .
  7. Stephen knap “ Christianity begins with believe and ends with believe “ but KC begins with athato brahma jinsas .
    1. We put some believe that there of higher reality , inquiry is basis ,
    2. Those people who don’t have this jinsas then sadhu sanga awakens this jinsas.
    3. Without brahma jinasa and Sadhu sanga then one does not have firm faith
  8. as devotees we also came with some faith ,
  9. in KC growth means growth of faith
  10. if we have faith that spiritual world is there , and we have faith in chanting then we will not be attracted by material enjoyment
  11. FAITH  
  12. some time our intelligence starts doubting , but we should not stop at doubting , we go ahead ,
  13. F-  futility :

a.       Devs some time feel so many problems are there ,Jai Dvaita mah told “ spiritual life is difficult but material life is impossible”

b.      If we don’t control the senses then constant toruture

c.       Even if we come to little bit of mode of goodness we come to know how the people in passion are suffering

d.      One SP told “there is no happiness in material world “ in mode of goodness we stop to chase after happiness , then relive gives us happiness .,

e.       Real happiness is when soul contact with supersoul

14.                   A --- Amazing 

a.       Amazing design we see in this world ,

b.      Theist will say God has given us so many things , but atheist will say that Go has not given so many things ,

c.       We can see that there is amazing design , but at same time there is arrangement for suffering

                                                               i.      Example in jail there is wall constructed but there is suffering

d.      If we think that this world is made for our enjoyment then we suffer ,

e.       Any analogy only points towards truth

                                                               i.      Jail analogy is not completely conveys like mercy of God

f.        Design of this world has to be seen as jail and hospital

g.       Imperfection is also part of this design

15.                   I – Integrity

a.       People get faith seeing leader’s integrity

b.      People lost the faith in Christianity because the priest were involve in wrong practices

c.       But when people saw Prabhupada who lived according to what he talked

d.      When people see lack of integrity then loose faith

16.                       T – Transformation

a.       We can see the transformation by practice of KC

b.      Apara dharma – success of it that religion leads to material advancement , but this does not works in kaliyuga , because of not following the rituals properly . this is karmkand religion ,

c.       When you do the religion God will awards you

d.      Para dharma – bhaktir paresanubhav virtakit anaytra ca

                                                               i.      Real dharma gives us experience of God and which helps to give the material enjoyment

e.       A devotee should not see the material advancement as success in spiritual life ,

f.        Bagavatam is so completely different from other’s ideas , that when one surrenders to God then he get much deeper in life, and God takes away everything

g.       Transformation is like growing of tree , initially it may be visible , but then growth is inner strength , we are able to resist the temptation .,

h.       What is differene between  for temptation

                                                               i.      Materialist – they welcome

                                                             ii.      Pure devotee-  get lost ,I don’t have to do anything

                                                            iii.      Casual devotee – I will do it when no body is seeing , I will do it later .

                                                         iv.      Serious devotee – he is busy so much in devotional service that he has no time for temptations , and he never gets time for them.

17.                     H-  Happiness

a.       People eat to satisfy themselves ,

b.      So if we have advance in KC ,we will know ourselves

c.     Eat your dharna and wear your artha .—HG shyamanada pr

d.      Get nourished from your dharma , and dress properly ,

e.       Practice of spiritual life is meant for our nourishment then we can nourish others

f.        One somebody asked Prabhupada .,”do you have doubts sometime “ then Prabhupada told “I don’t have any doubts otherwise how can I preach”

g.       In Christianity  there are not proper answers why people suffering , like a new born child “  , why God makes people suffer differently

h.       There are two types of doubts – heart doubt – is really devotees can guide me to spiritual world , the doubts which are related to core philosophy of KC , when we apply ourselves to KC then these doubts goes away . then there is brain doubt – like how this Jambudwip , how billions people were living Dwaraka ,

i.         We should focus on core principles ,   then people ‘s faith increased then experience comes

j.        By the application of KC goes away

  1. material desire comes from doubts .,
    1. if we have faith then we will control our senses
  2. KC is like drinking sweet rice , but our doubt are like stones in sweet rice ,
    1. Solution is remove those stones ,don’t throw the sweet rice
    2. So solution is application  of KC
  1. more we purifies ourselves then we can become happy
  2. are you happy --- I am happy that I am on the path of happiness

Mundane Vs Transcedental Literature

Srimad Bhagvatam Class 1.1.19

vayaà tu na vitåpyäma

TRANSLATION

We never tire of hearing the transcendental pastimes of the Personality of Godhead, who is glorified by hymns and prayers. Those who have developed a taste for transcendental relationships with Him relish hearing of His pastimes at every moment.

  1. Sages are physically tired but they are again again asking same question –that we are very eager to hear the pastimes of Lord.
  2. In text 12 ---All blessings upon you, O Süta Gosvämé. You know for what purpose the Personality of Godhead appeared in the womb of Devaké as the son of Vasudeva. , please tell us we are very eager to hear
  3. In these texts eagerness of audience is highlighted and
  4. Mundane literature is static whereas transcendental knowledge is dynamic , because matter is static but spirit is dynamic .
  5. Mundane literature is stale but while reading the transcendental literature we get more and more pleasure ,
  6. In fifth chapter Narad muni is discussing with Vyas dev that mundane literature is for crows like people , it is all trash , garbage , refuse remainants of sensual pleasure ,
  7. We don’t go by text but by essence , even if some grammatical mistakes are there
    1. Pastime of Isvarpuri told Lord Chaitanya to edit his book , and LCM made some correction ,but Isvar puri disapproved his corrections
    2. Even Lord tells by these lilas that whatever written by pure devotees  is always glorious
  8. We have to satisfy our intellect with spiritual subjects otherwise we will satisfy it with mundane junk news .
  9. Because we have forgotten who we are so we are on wrong path , what is page 3 in new paper , people look forward for people gossips ,
  10. So the tendency to know is there but purpose is defeated
  11. Because of reading / knowledge transformation takes place
    1. Children indulge in bad practices , shooting others
  12. Mundane knowledge is totally rubbish ,children are exposed to such environment
  13. Tendency to pick up and learn is there ,
  14. Negative is taken up more quickly , we have ability to pick up negative knowledge more fast than positive knowledge ,
  15. That’s why spiritual knowledge is always discussed , even Lord shows himself eagerness to hear it,
    1. When Yudhisthar mah was feeling very sorrow after battlefield , and Krishna also could not get satisfied , then He told to listen from Bhismadev , and this news got spread around ,before pandavas went ,so many  risis went to Bhisma , vyas dev ,sukdev goswami , Narad muni. Parvat muni , gautam – they all assembled to hear the instruction from Bhismadev , they all eager to hear ,   even Lord is hearing .
    2. In the life of Chiatanya mahaprabhu , He is very very eager to hear SB , discussed pastimes from SB many many times ,
    3. Srinivas acharya to hear from Gadhadhar pandit , he went to bring another copy of SB from srikhanda , he came from Puri
  16. We should be ready to face any difficulty to hear from pure devotee , spiritual master .

a.       Radhanath mahraj – in initial days ,one person recites on Ram katha ,mah even though did not understand but eager to hear , Ramsevak was only reciting damodar lila ,  mah told “am I not qualified to hear , they are discussing for two hours and you are telling me same story and in short , “ 

  1. Eagerness to hear and absorb Krishna katha , or Ram katha ,
  2. We have to develop same eagerness to read Srila Prabhupada books .
  3. Whenever we read transcendental literature ,it is relishing
  4.

Krishna is the object of love and the reservoir of love is Srimati Radharani.

Living entity are so pure in their heart that they are always full of life.

 

The gopis are also performing joyous ceremony for Krishna with turmeric and butter milk,especially all the people who had come .So the nandatsova is beautiful described.This is a great festival and all the living beings in vrindavan come together.

Flowers are saying that please take some fragrance from us.Trees also want to offer

Something to krsna . jasmine flower . This way in vrindavana even all the living entities derive great pleasure in giving pleasure ot krsna. In boat race if someone thinks that i

Am the alone person rowing and others are not doing.You can win a boat race when all people driving the boat in same way. In material world u will find this thing.

Ones heart is fill with anger.

 

e.g. coordination of instruments lead to nice musical triphet. Otherwise a mess.

 

So if u argue that I wiil continue to play jambe.

There is no -ve competition there. How people are foolish of this world.

How the Tulsi plant comes in front and other plants go behind.

Tulsi Krishna priyasi , same way bumble bee is singing glory of Krishna .

That sound is not as sweet as cookoo and peacock.

Kujat kokile mayor svada jale

 

But when bumble bee is singing glory of krsna they all keep mum.In this way such things can happen only on platform of non-envy. Potentially every soul is divine and he has this love but if it is not there then there are anarthas due to which original soul is covered.

 

In this world everyone is hankering for love and respect .It is seen in people .People do many-many things .Somehow inspire others to love them .Men clean shave-headed.

We know when we  are smart people will look upon us.When we talk to people on some subject, we want to show to others.Everyone is hankering .Even boasting and bragging hastheir root in need of love. People add things and say them . Because I have need of love. There is a great need of love.

 

Explanation:- Because in spiritual world Krishna is the centre of love . Ths tendency of dressing artistically comes from the spiritual world. In the material world also we try to do that.We are imitating krsna. We want to be the hero .

 

But if we dovetail our propensity to serve Krishna whole heartedly then we will get mpre satisfaction we are looking for. Living entities in spiritual receives love from krsna and from other living entities. How krsna deals with all . When people come to temple their nature becomes like  a child,. They want to serve others.

 

The religous movement which is aim towards giving love is successful . U give love u will get love……………………..

 

A person with spiritual thoughts spreads a aura. In field of psychology that if somebody has feeling of enmity or one says bad words , it immediately affects other person in form of thought waves.

 

BSS thakur says that mahabhagvat devotee can not be insulted by other person.

 

Someone may say that I love some person but still that person is rude with me. If u give love then do not expect that love will come from the same person . Previously u might have given hate towards others that which is coming now.

 

Similarly in our life also if we get love then we will also be object of love. Yatha srishti tatha drishti.

 

Everything looks brown , never mind that whatever is my state of consciousness of mind that way only I will lok everything.

When u r in happy state of mind then even someone scolds u will not mind.

 

We all go by the mind . How I will tell the other boy and parent. State of mind reflects in everything , therefore we should not be mental and be detached from the mind.

If I get poor results in exams so one should know that who is responsible fo rhtat.

One should stop identifying with the mind. When u look at the others u have to separate the bad person from the bad act , that person is .

Many people who behave bad is due to wome circumstance if u do not separate it then he has good side too which often we do not see.We have to find out that how we can contribute in increasing person’s goodness. When ever someone acts in an hurtful way.Probably I have done some big blunder.

Hate not the sinner but the sin . The same person who behaved bad now behaved good sometime before. Why this person is so harshly to me.

 

Seeing good in others is very vital for us and neglecting their bad activities.He always like to associate with many devotees.

 

If we see the background of devotee then we will not feel    bad about them .Our view point completely changes.

 

Till the time u do not led _ve negativities of others and pain staickingly see good others then love will develop in our heart for others. When u give love u will also get love.

When u get that u will be start seeing good in others.

 

A boy used to find fault with gurus,ISKCON.Fault finding became a habit . People used to fear going near him. And he fell down . He lost faith also .

 We have to be very careful .Prabhupada showed that anger of a devotee is trascedental.

It is like a wave in the ocean .As there may be a high tide on the surface but very grave in the ocean. But SP used to forget about that anger. For Prabhupada loving and respecting

vaisnavas was the most important thing. Such great souls their anger is superficial but in the core of their heart they have great volcano .

 

In name of commiting vaisnava aparadha .

Who has the right to correct and on what platform one should correct .

Correction should be done on the platform of compassion and love.

Guru , king, parents can correct ,they have that adhikara.

We will see brighter side of people . In the same fridge where fishes were kept.

 

Devotees are trying so much effort to please Krishna wearing tilaka and we offend them .

We should know that devotee is a very rare specie.

1.      we have tendency to give more importance to the things which give more result , but everything depends upon substance ,

a.       in building if foundation is not stong then building will collapse

2.      in dev life if foundation is not strong , then when difficulties comes then it will become very difficult to sustain in devotional life

3.      HHSachinandan mah says that root of tree has to grow very deep then it can sustain in storms

4.      root is strongly laid when we give great importance to reading ,hearing ,chanting .

5.      in kaliyuga ,yuga dharma is chanting of HolyName

6.      chanting becomes ritualistic when we take it for granted , somehow finishing it, not understanding its importance

7.      chanting in conditioned state may be austerity , but take great care to perform this wonderful sacrifice to perform chanting

8.      if some one does as ritual then he will not benefit much.

9.      RG says , just like jaundice patient .

10.  medicine for jaundice patient is to continue to take the medicine

11.  how one should take this medicine ::;daily ,regualraly , in very regulated manner with great attention ------then this material desease will go away

12.  forgetfulness of Krishnais the root cause , this is main problem ,

13.  in order to come out of this condition

a.       like a person bitten by snake is cured by chanting of mantra

14.  we are in unconscious condition, to come out of this condition is chanting of Hare Krishna mantra and to revive our true nature and eternal constitutional position

a.       so we need to do it with great attention

15.  to the degree we pay great attention to chanting

16.  most important is attentive hearing .

17.  Haridas thakur even in old condition and even after LCM told him but he wanted to chant his rounds

18.  while chanting , if we are in-attentive is like when we invite a person to our house , then we don’t pay attention to him and go away , so guest will feel dejected and disgusted ,

19.                        when we are in-attentive then we have more important plans than Lord , it is disrespecting the Lord.

20.  so if we want to get out of this medicine we take this chanting very seriously

21.  attentively hearing each syllable when we are chanting . otherwise we will be chanting some other mantra

22.                   Hearing and reading --------------

23.  sastras which are given to us by the Lord ,it is very essential that we read them

24.  SP very much wanted that to read the sastras scrutinizing ,

25.  if intelligence is not strong then we will be guided by mind , then mind will dwell on the though of sense gratification , and it will take us in wrong direction .

26.so one must know that how much attentive we should be to control this mind ,

27.  like a hunter is very attentive to keep the animal under control ,

28.  at every moment there is touge of war between mind and intelligence .who wins will depend upon who is more strong .

29.  one reason is why a person sleeps during chanting and class when mind has taken him for ride all over places.

30.  mind is like unchaste wife , mind takes help of various anarths to murder the intelligence , then mind takes over and it goes in completely wrong direction

31.  uncontrolled mind is like uncontrolled elephant who can destroy whole garden

32.  in practice of dev life a moment inattention can cause havoc ,

33.                        with the strong intelligence one can control the mind

34.                        the way to make intelligence strong by study of sastras , then intelligence can discriminate what is right and what is wrong .

35.  what are results if one is not careful in these basic principle of reading ,hearing ,chanting .

a.       one will fall pray to illicit activities .

b.      one goes further away ,

c.       it becomes difficult to practice dev life

d.      one determination and faith goes away

e.       previous material desire crops again

f.        one commits offenses to vaishanavas

 

36.  one’s foundation is weak ,one very easily becomes pray to maya .one looses enthusiasm to practice over a period of time .

37.  anischita bhajan kriya --- bhajan kriya becomes not fixed .

38.  but enthusiasm has to remain then one has to understand philosophically why we are doing and what we are doing

39.  problem of being on mental platform , is accepting and rejecting.one day it will be nice and one day it will be not nice

40.  if steady enthusiasm has to be there then one has to be firmly fixed in the basic principles ,that why I am practicing the devotional life

41.  visaya sangara --- constant struggle of mind and senses are pulling towards sense objects but with intelligence one understand that sense gratification is bad , but because one has not developed higher taste then fall pray to sense gratification

42.                        how does higher taste develops , to the degree one is attentive in hearing ,chanting ,and in every aspect of devotional life ,to that degree one can develop the higher taste .

43.  to practice the dev life life long , there is no retirement ,

44.  in dev life it we are waiting when this dev life will end it means we are on very gross platform ,

45.  when the boy and girl out of some so called love then time flies ,

46.  if we are wanting to develop the love for the supreme lord then how can we expect this activity of dev life to end , it means that we have not develop the love for Krishna .

47.  the very fact that we ar thinking this activity of chanting ,class will end it means that we have not develop the love for the supreme lord Krishna

48.  if we want to do the acitivity of dev life then we need to develop the higher taste ,otherwise everyday it is same mantra , same philosophy ,

49.  if we have material consciousness then we will think that this acticivity is monotonus

50.  this higher taste can be developed to the degree we are attentive in these chanting .hearing , and to that degree we will be able to practice

51.                         because we don’t have this taste so there are various services , to purify our senses by assisting in preaching mission , by performing the various activities in dev life ,we purify the senses then we will be able to develop the taste

52.                       so we need proper balance between sadhana and services.

53.                       Q&A---in order to understand our own deficiencies and mistakes mercy of the Lord is required , when Lord sees the devotee sincere then he can understand his own deficiencies , it requires purification to see our own shortcomings , when process of purification begins then one realizes that I have this anarths , and it become more prominent , as one dev advances then smallest  of anarths becomes very prominent for him , then one can very effectively work on the anarthas ,

a.     Smallest of offense one purified dev considers it big mistake like BSS taking vow of not eating the mango , and madhavendra puri cursed himself for eating sweeet rice before it was offered

b.     How seriously we practice
